The above cartoon is what we call satire. Satire is the use of humor, exaggeration, irony, or ridicule to expose or criticize a person or important issue. Study the satirical cartoon above and write a paragraph that quickly explains what the author is satirizing. Use at least 2 pieces of evidence from the cartoon and explain how it supports your claim. An example has been done for you. In the cartoon above the author is ridiculing the use of cell phones in schools. The caption says, "If you can't beat 'em..." meaning join them. The author is stressing that schools are trying their best to get students focused on their work by making all these rules to curb cell phone use, but nothing is working. Because nothing is working, the cartoonist implies that schools should just embrace the technology; however, the text from the teacher to the class uses poor grammar and spelling. The cartoonist does that to illustrate how ridiculous it would be for a school to embrace technology over real education.
